Eyelids and Counterweight plus Servos?

Hi, I just managed to install the eyelid add-on. I'm sorry but I have to say that the manual and the documentation in general is rather sparse. The counterweight is far to heavy for the just bearings alone. My guess is that it's meant to be used in combination with servo motors. Could you please clarify:

  • Which servos will work best on the QBO (digital feedback like Dynamixels)?
  • How to connect the servo to the gear that rotates the eyelid?
  • Is the lens focus of the camera meant to rotate together with the eyelid? ( so it could implement follow focus)

Thank you and best regards,
Eli

Dear Eli,
The servos are enough to move the head with the bearings. You will have to affix a counterweight ( provide into the Ppi3 box ) on the back of the head of Q.bo One to balance it so as not to exert unnecessary force on the Dynamixel XL-320 servos operating on the axis. Please, read our Indiegogo post about it.
"The first Q.bo we rolled out a few years ago had a complex, heavy and expensive system consisting of motors, gears, bearings and controllers to power the eyelids so that they can move automatically and enable different various forms of expression.  However, in order to make Q.bo One affordable to as many people as possible, eyelids are only presented as aesthetics to the overall design.  Our team receive many feedback from backers to provide the capability for the eyelids to move.  In this regards, we have made a conscious decision to provide 2 Bearings ( the cost is not much ) FREE to all backers so that the eyelids can be made to move "manually" to work with different expression as an added feature.  In the near future, the eyelids will be able to move “automatically” as the other components required will be made available to all Q.bo One owners. We will inform accordingly."

So if we install the eye lids we need to install the counterweight too?

We recommend to install the counterweight but is not necessary at least you have some issues with the head movements.

I've a pre-assembled Q.bo. It does include as far as I see eyelids but are they servo driven? Or is this an add-on?

The servo driven is a future feature. We are working on it right now.
